Warm Up: We will read two passages together. Which one is showing and which one is telling?
Writing Sample #1:
Little Marty acted like a real brat in the morning and made an awful mess on the kitchen floor, which his mother had the clean up.
Writing Sample #2:
"I don't want any," Marty said glowering.
It looked as if he had not gotten enough sleep the night before. Yet, his mother knew he'd slept like a rock.
"Now Marty," his mother said, "be a good boy and try it."
"I hate that stuff!"
"Please dear," she said. "Musn't say hate. Try it first, then see. Oatmeal is good for you. You'll love it."
But the heartier she sounded, the darker became Marty's scowl. "I hate it," he repeated.
His mother sighed and placed the bowl of steaming oatmeal down in front of him. "Wait until it cools, dear," she said.
She stepped back, which was a good thing.
With one swift accurate sweep of his right arm, Marty caught the bowl perfectly and sent it spinning through the air. When it struck the floor, it did not break. Still spinning, it spewed its contents over the newly waxed floor until it came to a halt against the wall. That was when it broke.
Rushing over in attempt to catch the spinning dish before it broke, Marty's mother stepped into the steaming porridge. It was not secure footing. Her feet flew out from under her, and she sat down in the oatmeal heavily.
"Oh Marty!" she groaned.

Past Student Sample:
Football is a very explosive sport. Both teams are vicious to each other. They fight for a dazzling, sparkling trophy. The players are all muddy, sometimes even bloody from the danky guy he slammed into. All the players bolt across the field just to get the mahogany ball. The field fills in flames. The elegant jerseys are now rotted away from all the tackles that sound like thunder crashing on Earth. At first, all the players are nervous; their faces turn white like if they saw a ghost. You could hear the teams cry "War!" The battle begins, and the game becomes intense. The players become beasts from within. They hunt for blood. Both players want to shatter each other and make each other cry. There is a feeling that ignites you to do it more and more. You won't swagger. You'll want to drive the enemy back from where they came from. The aftermath of all this is either glory for you and your team, or dishonor and despair.

Peer Commenting
NOW, your peer editor will read what you wrote and leave comments for improvement. Here are the guidelines:
(Answer the following questions in the comment section)
1. Do you see an MLA Heading?
2. Do you see a creative title? If not, suggest one!
3. First paragraph - is there enough information on the background of the speaker? If not, what information could be added?
4. 2nd paragraph - Is there a quote from the speech cited correctly?
"Quote" (Source Paragraph).
If not, state what is incorrect.
And is the quote explained in relation to PATHOS (feelings, propaganda, convincing the audience)? If needed, give advice.
5. 3rd paragraph - Do you see a good argument for or against the speaker's ethos (credibility)? Is there any information that can be added?
6. Point out any glaring spelling/ grammatical errors. You can copy and paste the words and phrases that the blogger should correct.
*****************************************
Here is MODEL of how you should PEER COMMENT:
1. You do not begin with your MLA heading - don't forget to put that in before this assignment is due!
2. Very creative title! Good work!
3. You have about 3 sentences in your background. You might want to add what position this person has in the government, why the speech was given, and how many years the person was in office.
4. Your quote is ALMOST cited correctly - don't forget the period at the end! Your explanation was good because it described how the speaker tries to trick the audience into believing him. However, your explanation of the pathos was short, so try adding another quote to explain.
5. You were very clear about if this person is believable or not. I personally don't trust him anymore after reading what you wrote!
6. Remember to capitalize the personal "i". And change your "cuz" to "because". This sentence was awkward: "He flagrantly to mainupulate the audience into thinking that he's good family man."

"Mercy" Killing?
Like abortion, euthanasia has multiple perspectives. You will reflect on Of Mice and Men and read two current articles, one more extreme than the other, and you will analyze the different possible points of view. Each response should be 3-5 THOUGHTFUL and academic sentences that include specific details.
1. Reflecting on Of Mice and Men
a. Explain George's perspective for what he did to Lennie.
b. Do you think that was the best thing to do for Lennie?
2. Father in Italy Accused of Murder
a. Explain the father's reasons for what he did.
b. Do you agree or disagree with what the father did? Why?
3. Man Kills Family after Losing his Job
a. Imagine and list things that might have been going through the father's mind as he contemplated his "mercy" killing. (In the article, the father's suicide note gives specific evidence of why he did what he did. Elaborate on it.) Specifically, what could he have been negative or paranoid about?
b. Unfortunately, with America's failing economy, many professionals are losing their jobs. While many do not resort to something as extreme as the man in the article, it does cause stress within families. What are some ways that parents can support children (to succeed in life) that do NOT require money?
4. After reading Of Mice and Men and the two news articles, what is your stance on euthanasia? Is "mercy" killing a legitimate way to ending someones life? List any exceptions, if you have any. (This response should be 7-10 sentences).
Your opinions on *Of Mice and Men*
1. Was it OK for George to encourage Lennie to fight Curley? Could there have been another solution? If so, be clear about what that solution might have been. (3-5 sentences: 3 points)

2. It's true that Lennie doesn't TRY to get into trouble, but he always does anyway. Considering this, do you think Lennie should be working at all? Should he be in a special institution away from society? (3-5 sentences: 3 points)

3. Curley is a boss like his dad, which is probably why he has to be mean to his workers. Without being aggressive and showing his power, do you think he would still get respect from his workers? (3-5 sentences: 3 points)

4. In your opinion, do you think it's OK that Curley's Wife flirts with Slim? (3-5 sentences: 3 points)

******************
After writing responses on your own blog, look at what your other classmates wrote. In a PROFESSIONAL manner, comment on FOUR classmates, telling them if you agree or disagree with their opinions and why. (Each comment must be THOUGHTFUL and 3-5 sentences)
Total points: Answers to the 4 questions + 4 comments on other blogs = 24 points
